Who we are
SSN serves as a specialist vehicle to support Southern and internationalist
efforts to constructively engage NSAGs in the areas of human rights
(HR), international humanitarian law (IHL), conflict-resolution,
peace-building, human security, human development, and democratization
through the following forms:
- exchange of experiences and lessons in NSAG engagement, through
conferences, workshops, publications and other resource materials
with a view to developing appropriate policy guidance
- some actual engagement of NSAGs which provides valuable hands-on
experience and practice as basis for expertise
- original research or special studies on various aspects of
NSA engagement, such as its psychological, cultural, sociological,
political, economic/developmental and legal aspects, as well as
analysis of and approaches to particular internal armed conflicts
and NSAGs from a Southern perspective
- further developing mechanisms for NSAG adherence, assistance,
accountability and participation in promoting and observing HR-IHL
norms, peace-related processes and agreements, conflict prevention/resolution
and long-term peace-building
- advocacy and lobbying domestically and internationally for
enabling conditions that allow, safeguard and facilitate humanitarian
and other constructive engagements of NSAGs by NGOs, esp. in a
time of terrorism and counter-terrorism.
